Prevaricate

verb: to lie to deviate from the truth: to speak falsely or misleadingly; deliberately misstate or create an incorrect impression; lie.

Rather than admitting that he had forgotten to pick up the groceries, he prevaricated and said that the store was closed on Sundays.
